Todays post will just be captions followed by pictures. Enjoy!
Caps for sale, any one?
Random ruin on the hillside. Fun fact: There are over a thousand ruins all over Ireland.
We went on a Cliffs of Moher cruise so we got to see the “Cliffs of Insanity” from the water and point of view of Buttercup and her kidnappers. (movie reference is The Princess Bride, 1987. If you haven’t seen the movie go watch it right now. It’s a classic.)
Lunch in a pub. It was marvelous. Sitting and enjoying a meal with a friend is always a delight and even better when in a pub in Ireland. Extremely family friendly environment.
Here are the cliffs from the top! They were spectacular. The weather is so similar to Washington state that we were fine, a little chilly but fine. Gretchen bought a sweater and Kelly a scarf so we were cozy enough.
Happiness right here in this picture!
A little tied bit about the next picture: O’Brien’s Tower. Built by a politician, Cornelius O’Brien, in 1835. He owned 10,000 acres of land, a huge amount back in the 1800’s. it was built for a folly- entertainment. Folklore holds that tourism would be a huge thing in the future. O’Brien built everything in the area around this purpose. He recognized the cliffs for this idea. For 20 years he was a member of congress so he had a lot of funding.
Can you see the cave? This is where part of the Harry Potter movie was filmed where Dumbledore takes Harry to a cave. It’s a ver tiny bit of the movie but another claim to fame for the cliffs.
A view of O’Brien’s tower from the other side
All over we see very large sheep. The local shops rely heavily on tourism. The make many things from merino wool.
Part of the cliffs walk. You can see the old path on the right and the actual path on the left that they encourage you to stay on as the cliffs are unstable in some places. Many have died thinking that they could inch close to the edge and nothing would happen.
Electric fences to discourage tourist from cutting across private property and also for the safety of the animals grazing.
Our quaint little bed and breakfast called Riverside Cottage. A breakfast of porridge and fruit hit the spot just right today.
A view from our little place of downtown Doolin.
Dinner at the Ivy Cottage, where a wedding took place the night before.
This looks amazing. Thanks for the great pictures. Kelly take good care of my mom.
